Photos of Newcastle
I moved to Newcastle in 2000, at a time when photography was barely even a hobby for me. I lived for a while on the Newcastle Quayside, and it was during this time that my interest in photography really started to develop.
The Newcastle Gateshead quayside is one of my favourite places in the world. It has a unique look and feel, and has more iconic buildings, bridges and views than most other places of a similar size, and more than some that are much larger. While a city like London, for example, is awash with iconic buildings, they are not so 'clustered'.
Many of the recent additions to Newcastle Gateshead have been here, roughly speaking, as long as I have: the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the Baltic and The Sage Gateshead have all opened since I moved here. The Angel of the North (possibly the most iconic structure, a few miles South of the Tyne) was completed in 1998.
While new architecture fascinates me, Newcastle in particular is not short of iconic architecture from less recent times - the Tyne Bridge, Swing Bridge and High Level Bridge are especially impressive, and if you head up the hill from the quayside on the Newcastle side, you will reach the grandeur of Grey Street and the Monument.
It is no exaggeration to say that I may not be a photographer now had I not moved to Newcastle in 2000.
I now live on the Gateshead riverside, at the Staiths South Bank - about a 20 minute walk to the quayside.
